Biofilter Island

On our local reservoir's island, we are working with a high school student, Hershel Agrawal to do research on controlling Phosphate, Nitrogen, and E. Coli. We are assisting him in terraforming an island in Reservoir #3 that will allow use to generate better data from our nutrient absorption trials and provide him with a means of generating data for his study in mycofiltration.

We will grow mycelium, which is fungi root networks, to filter out Phosphate, Nitrogen and E. Coli. We created two small ponds that water flow can be controlled from. The water pumped will be coming from the reservoir and the mushrooms will be grown in cultured wood chips. Building these small ponds will help us to test water on a smaller scale. Also, the island can be put to use for easier access to fisherman who regularly visit the Reservoir for recreational fishing.
We found mosquito larvae in the pool!
