Spotting Algal Blooms!
Since the warmer spring season, we have been looking out for and spotting the start of algal blooms. We have noticed most of the algae forming along the shorelines, some places more than others.
Drones
We have recently been testing out and planning drone flights around the reservoir. We have been doing this to spot algal blooms from an aerial view of the reservoir. Our team can use this information to further expand on our research of algae and algal blooms.
Planting Corn!
Also due to the spring season, we decided to replant corn in the Maize Chinampa, and begin planting on Biofilter Island. The corn on the Maize Chinampa was originally planted in the summer, and it did not survive in the fall and winter seasons. We are now putting the Maize Chinampa to use again, as it has shown to be successful in absorbing phosphate and nitrogen that causes algal blooms in its surrounding area. Our larger scale model of our Algae Attack Chinampa will also be going in the reservoir to accompany the Maize Chinampa.
We have also planted corn on Biofilter Island, and placed it in one of the two pools to begin our research and testing.
