All About Aquaponics

l

Aquaponics
is a way of growing plants using nutrients in the water.
These nutrients can come from the waste of fish and other aquatic animals. Plants can also absorb phosphate and nitrogen in the water.

Plants grown "aquatically" are more beneficial than those grown traditionally (in soil alone). These plants have large roots, but small stems. Those grown aquatically have small roots, but bigger stems.

Using aquaponics can also help control algal blooms. Algal blooms are rapid increases of algae in fresh water or other marine environments. Algal blooms can be harmful because they can produce toxins that pose as a threat to some organisms health. Nitrogen and phosphate are a cause of algal blooms. Since aquaponics can be used to absorb the nitrogen and phosphate in the water, they can limit algal blooms.
